Theresia Porges née Pentlarž – Karolinenthal
|
Provisional sub-clan designation: Karolinenthal ancestral Porges (early-19th-century Prague-Karlín branch).
This branch is anchored on the obituary of Theresia Porges née Pentlarž (Karolinenthal, †29 May 1895),
who at her death in her 89th year is the oldest documented Porges woman in this corpus,
born ca. 1806–1807 — i.e. before the Napoleonic occupation of Bohemia.
She was « gewesene Vorsteherin des israelitischen Frauenvereines in Carolinenthal »
(former president of the Israelite Women's Association of Karolinenthal),
making her the first community-leadership Porges woman documented in the corpus.
The post involved leadership over the principal organized expression of Jewish women's bourgeois life in Karlín
— welfare to widows and orphans, dowries for poor brides, charitable activities, and social cohesion of the community's women.
The Karolinenthal connection runs across at least two generations of the Porges presence:
this 1895 entry, and the later Adolf Porges – Schalek alliance (1915 onward).
A direct link between the two Karlín branches is plausible but not yet established.
Theresia Porges née Pentlarž
(b. ca. 1806/07, d. Karolinenthal 29/05/1895, in her 89th year of life, of Altersschwäche – senile decline).
Residence: Karolinenthal, Königstrasse 85 (new) (today: Sokolovská třída, Praha 8).
Buried at the New Israelite Cemetery, Strašnice, on 31/05/1895 at 15:00.
Civic distinction: former president (Vorsteherin) of the Israelite Women's Association of Karolinenthal.
Husband (predeceased before 1895, identity to be confirmed): a Mr. Porges of Karolinenthal,
plausibly born ca. 1800–1810.
The maiden surname Pentlarž (with the Czech háček on ž) is distinctly Czech in form and indicates
a Czech-cultural Jewish in-marriage as far back as the 1820s–1830s — among the earliest such alliances in the broader corpus.
Heinrich Porges (alive 1895), only surviving child named in the 1895 obituary.
Married Kathie Porges (alive 1895, maiden name not given).
Five children:
Irma Hofmann née Porges – married Gottlieb Hofmann (named in 1895 as Schwiegerenkel).
Helene Porges (named as Enkel/grandchild of Theresia in 1895).
Otto Porges.
Alice Porges.
Gisela Porges.

PorgesGravesNJC.html records:
« hier ruht unser ...stgeliebter gatte ... vater Heinrich Porges (d. 23/1/1906 at 66 yo) Kaufmann aus Karolinenthal
und unsere unvergessliche mutter Käthe Porges (b. 29/11/1848, d. 6/3/1928) — in memoriam Marie Porgesova roz. Müllerova,
dem andenken unserer geliebten Helene (d. 30/3/1903 at 31 yo). Plot 19-1-3 ».
This is almost certainly the same Heinrich Porges (named as Theresia's son in 1895)
and his wife Kathie / Käthe Porges, plus their daughter Helene Porges (d. 30/03/1903, aged 31 — i.e. b. ca. 1872).
The grave thus confirms the 1895 filiation and provides:
- Heinrich Porges, « Kaufmann (merchant) aus Karolinenthal », d. 23/01/1906 aged 66 (b. ca. 1840)
- Käthe Porges, b. 29/11/1848, d. 06/03/1928 (aged 79)
- Helene Porges (daughter), d. 30/03/1903 aged 31
- Marie Porgesová née Müllerová (likely a daughter-in-law)
Holocaust trajectory: the four other named grandchildren in 1895 — Irma Hofmann, Otto, Alice, Gisela Porges —
were born ca. 1865–1885 and would have been in the principal Holocaust risk age range (53–73 in 1938).
Cross-checking holocaust.cz, Yad Vashem, and the Terezín memorial is needed to establish their fates.
