About the Porges balneologists of Marienbad |
|
Marienbad (Czech : Mariánské Láznì) is a spa town
in western Bohemia, today in the Czech Republic. From the mid-19th century until 1938 it was
one of the most fashionable European spa resorts, attracting kings, writers and a large
international clientele.
Several Jewish physicians settled there as balneologists — specialists in mineral
spring cures — running villas and treatment cabinets during the season (May to September).
Dr. S. Porges belonged to that small professional milieu. He died in 1886 ; his widow
Anna née Fischl survived him by 28 years and died in 1914, on the eve of the First
World War.
These two persons do not appear on any other page of the site. They are presented here on the
