Hedwig Schwelb née Porges
Sub-clan AL

What is a Sub-clan?

Sub-clan AL – matriarchal anchor: Hedwig Schwelb née Porges (d. Prague, 11 August 1928).

Buried at the Israelite Cemetery, Strašnice, on Tuesday 14 August 1928 at 3:45 p.m.

Hedwig is one of the named daughters of Resie Porges née Schalek (†1915, Sub-clan BY, see Schalek-Porges Adolf cohort) and Adolf Porges of Prag-Karolinenthal. She had married Ernst Schwelb (by 1915 already her named husband), an eminent Prague jurist, and they had at least three children:

Dr. Egon Schwelb – the eminent international jurist (b. Prague 4 June 1899, d. Geneva 5 July 1979), Deputy Director of the United Nations Human Rights Division 1947-1962, professor of international law at Yale, author of seminal works on human rights in international law. Egon Schwelb is therefore a grandson of Resie Porges née Schalek + Adolf Porges (Sub-clan BY) through his mother Hedwig Schwelb née Porges (Sub-clan AL).

Dr. Karla Schwelb – also a doctorate-bearing professional

Helene Schwelb

Hedwig's siblings, named in her 1928 obituary as "Geschwister" (thereby retroactively confirming the Sub-clan BY 1915 reconstruction):

Eva Ramm née Porges (alive 1928, New York) – Sub-clan AL2

Lucie Zeckendorf née Porges (alive 1928, Prague)

Olga Klopper née Porges (alive 1928, Vienna)

Bertha Metzger née Porges (alive 1928, Vienna)

Two siblings named on the 1915 maternal obituary are absent here: Josef Porges of Brüder Perutz and Bertha Metzger née Porges is named here but not Olga Klopper, etc. — sorry, all four Eva/Lucie/Olga/Bertha sisters appear here. The brother Josef Porges of Brüder Perutz is omitted from the 1928 sibling list — suggesting Josef predeceased his sister Hedwig between 1915 and 1928.

Holocaust trajectory

  • Hedwig Schwelb née Porges – already deceased 1928, spared
  • Ernst Schwelb (husband) – at extreme Vienna/Prague Anschluss-era risk after March 1938. Cross-checking holocaust.cz / DÖW database needed.
  • Egon Schwelb – emigrated to UK before WWII (joined the Czech government-in-exile in London, then UN), survived
  • Dr. Karla Schwelb – Holocaust trajectory unknown, search needed
  • Helene Schwelb – Holocaust trajectory unknown, search needed
  • Eva Ramm née Porges + David Ramm, New York – safe through Holocaust era
  • Lucie Zeckendorf née Porges, Prague – at high Holocaust risk after March 1939
  • Olga Klopper née Porges + Max Klopper, Vienna – at extreme risk after March 1938
  • Bertha Metzger née Porges + Arnold Metzger, Vienna – at extreme risk after March 1938

This is a critical Holocaust-search target page: 4 named siblings + 4 named brothers-in-law + multiple grandchildren of Sub-clan BY/AL/AL2, mostly in Vienna and Prague during 1938-1945.
